Translation and terminology services

The Prime Minister’s Office is responsible for translating statutes, i.e. acts and decrees, into Finland's national languages. The translated documents include motions for Government proposals, the budget and supplementary budgets, speeches and addresses by the President of the Republic and Ministers, reports to Parliament and the replies to written questions presented by Parliament. The Government Translation Unit is responsible for providing translation services into Finnish and Swedish.

Texts and speeches by civil servants and the management of the Prime Minister’s Office are translated into foreign languages as necessary. Translation services into foreign languages are coordinated in the Department for Administration and Specialist Services.

The Prime Minister’s Office offers terminology service and compiles glossaries especially on terminology related to the Finnish state administration. The aim is to establish and harmonise the terminology within the Government ministries both in national and foreign languages. The Terminology Service, functioning as part of the Government Translation Unit, is responsible for the terminology work.
